What should you actually book? Every service at Barbery Coast, what it costs, and how long it takes
A regular wrote something in a review this summer that stuck with me. "Haircuts used to be a gamble. New shop, new barber, delivering varying results."
He wasn't talking about us. He was talking about the years before, walking into places with no real idea what to ask for and hoping it worked out.
I'm Luis. I work one of the three chairs at Barbery Coast on Grant Avenue in North Beach. Most men who sit down in front of me know they want a haircut. Almost nobody knows we'll do a twenty-minute neck and ears cleanup for $35, or that the hot towel is something you can book on purpose instead of getting as a surprise at the end. One customer left us a review calling it "an unexpected bonus." It shouldn't have been unexpected. That's on us.
So here is the whole menu. What each thing is, what it costs, and how long you'll be in the chair.
The thirty-second version
Twenty minutes, $35. A clean-up. Neck and ears, a buzz cut, or a hot oil treatment for your beard.
Half an hour, $55 to $75. One thing done properly. A haircut, a shave, or a beard trim.
Forty-five minutes to an hour, $85 to $110. Hair and beard together.
Seventy-five minutes, $165. The Yerba Buena. All of it.

Twenty minutes: the in-between visit
Three services live here, all $35.
The neck and ears cleanup is twenty minutes and it is the most underused thing we do. Your cut still looks fine on top, but the back of your neck has gone soft and the ears have grown in. It buys you another two or three weeks before you need the real appointment.
A buzz cut is twenty-five minutes: one guard, even all over, razor edge-up around the hairline. Simple work, but the edge-up is what separates a barber's buzz from one you did yourself in the bathroom.
The hot oil beard treatment is twenty minutes and it is not a haircut at all. Warm oil worked through, towels, comb-out. Book it when your beard has gone wiry and you don't want it shorter.
Half an hour: one thing, done properly
Six services, thirty minutes each, $55 to $75. This is where most appointments land.
A haircut is $75. Scissors, clippers, whatever the cut needs.
A straight razor shave is $65. Hot towels, hot lather, a straight razor with the grain and then across it.
It is the closest shave you can get and it is not something to squeeze into a lunch break.
A straight razor head shave is $75 and takes the same care over considerably more surface area.
A beard trim with razor line-up is $70. Worth separating these two words, because people use them interchangeably and they are different jobs. The trim is shaping and length. The line-up is the razor work along the cheek line, the neck line and the moustache. A trim without a line-up looks tidy. A trim with one looks deliberate.
The hot towel facial is $55, and the scalp massage is $65. Neither touches your hair length. Book them when you want the half hour more than you want the haircut.
Forty-five minutes to an hour: hair and beard together
Eight combinations sit in this band, $85 to $110. The two worth explaining:
A skin fade is $85 and forty-five minutes, where a regular haircut is $75 and thirty. People ask what the extra fifteen minutes is for. It is the blending. A skin fade goes to bare skin at the bottom and has to arrive there without a visible line anywhere. That gradient is done in passes with progressively finer work, and there is no way to rush it that doesn't show. If a shop offers you a skin fade in twenty minutes, ask what they're skipping.
A long hair cut is also $85 and forty-five minutes. Long hair takes longer because it is cut wet, dried, and then corrected, and you cannot see what you actually have until it dries.
The rest are combinations: haircut with beard trim at $85, haircut with straight razor shave at $100, skin fade with beard trim at $95, skin fade with a shave at $105, and the full skin fade with beard trim and razor line-up at $110.
Seventy-five minutes: the Yerba Buena, $165
Everything, in order, without hurrying. A customer described his last one better than I can:
"The warm welcome as if you were a returning friend as you walk in the door and a glass of whisky starts things off just right. Hot towels, a precise haircut, hot lather followed by a straight razor shave that left my face smoother than a baby's bottom."
Seventy-five minutes is the point of it. You could have the same components separately in less time and pay about the same. What you're buying is nobody looking at a clock, including me.
I'll say the unpopular thing, though: most people should not book this. Book it before a wedding, before something that matters, or when you actively want the seventy-five minutes. Booking the biggest service on the menu because it's the biggest service on the menu is how you end up feeling like you overpaid for a haircut you'd have been happy with at $75.

Two things worth knowing before you book at Barbery Coast
You don't need to know what the cut is called. Bring a photo, or describe what you want in plain words, or tell me what you hated about the last one. That last one is more useful than the photo. We wrote a whole piece on how to tell your barber what you want if you want the longer version.
The price is the same in all three chairs. Skeez, Caleb and I charge the same for the same service. We are all licensed through the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, and none of us is a "premium" tier. Book whoever is free. If you're new, one of our regulars put it better than we would: he's sat in all three chairs and reckons "you really can't go wrong."
Questions we get
How much is a haircut at Barbery Coast? $75 for thirty minutes. A skin fade is $85 for forty-five. Adding a beard trim takes a haircut to $85.
What's the difference between a beard trim and a razor line-up? The trim is length and shape, done with clippers and scissors. The line-up is the straight-razor work along the cheek, neck and moustache lines that gives the beard a clean edge. Our beard trim at $70 includes both.
Do I need an appointment? Appointments are easier and you can book online. Walk-ins are welcome when a chair is open, though on a Saturday afternoon in North Beach that's a gamble.
How often should I come in? It depends on the cut, and we've answered that one properly elsewhere. Short answer for most men: every three to four weeks, or every two if you're running a skin fade.
Which service should I book if I've never been? A haircut at $75, or the haircut with beard trim at $85 if you've got a beard. Start there. You can always add the shave next time, once you know what our thirty minutes looks like.
